Reaching a 100th edition is an extraordinary achievement. In a world where information is abundant, but meaningful insight is harder to find, consistently producing a publication that informs, educates and connects the financial planning profession is something truly worth celebrating.
On behalf of the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI), I extend my warmest congratulations to Alexis Knipe and the entire Blue Chip team on this remarkable milestone. One hundred editions represent far more than a number. They reflect years of commitment, countless hours of research, writing, editing and production and the generous contribution of many voices across the profession.
They also speak to trust. A publication only reaches a milestone such as this when it continues to remain relevant, when it understands its audience and when it contributes meaningfully to the conversations that matter.
Blue Chip has done exactly that. For many years, it has provided a trusted platform for financial planners, industry leaders, academics, regulators, product providers and professional bodies to share ideas and strengthen understanding.
It has helped capture the evolution of the financial planning profession in South Africa and has created space for important discussions about advice, ethics, professionalism, regulation, technology, consumer outcomes and the future of financial planning.
The relationship between the FPI and Blue Chip is grounded in a shared purpose: advancing the financial planning profession and improving the financial wellbeing of the public we serve. Blue Chip is the FPI’s official supported industry publication and has become an important channel through which the profession is informed, challenged and inspired.
It has helped amplify the voice of the profession, showcase the achievements of CFP®, FSA® and RFP® professionals and communicate developments that affect financial planners, practices, corporate partners and consumers.
This partnership matters because professional financial planning does not grow in isolation. It grows through collaboration, consistent communication and shared commitment. It grows when standards are explained, when excellence is celebrated, when difficult issues are discussed honestly and when the profession sees itself reflected in credible, thoughtful content. Blue Chip has played a meaningful role in making this possible.
Looking back at recent editions, it is clear how effectively Blue Chip has captured the major themes shaping financial planning. The publication has covered regulatory developments, including the Conduct of Financial Institutions framework and the broader compliance landscape.
It has explored the continued shift from product-focused advice to holistic, client-centred financial planning. It has also reflected on behavioural coaching, financial wellbeing, retirement planning, succession, practice management, professional standards and the value of advice.
Importantly, Blue Chip has not avoided the themes that may define the next chapter of our profession. Artificial Intelligence, digital innovation, changing client expectations, ESG investing, financial wellness, responsible business practices and the future of advice have all featured prominently.
These are not abstract issues. They influence how financial planners work, how clients experience advice and how the public comes to understand the value of professional financial planning.
What I particularly value is that Blue Chip has balanced innovation with humanity.
Technology will continue to reshape the way financial advice is delivered, but financial planning remains, at its heart, a human profession. Clients do not seek only products, calculations or investment solutions. They seek clarity, confidence, guidance and trust.
They seek professionals who can help them make decisions about their families, their businesses, their futures and their lives. Tools will evolve, but empathy, integrity, competence and professional judgement remain timeless.
Blue Chip has also played an important role in celebrating excellence. Over the years, the magazine has showcased the Financial Planner of the Year finalists and winners, FPI award recipients, emerging professionals, diversity champions, professional practices and thought leaders who are making a meaningful contribution to the profession.
These stories are important because they do more than recognise achievement. They inspire others, strengthen professional identity and remind us that financial planning is a profession built on service.
As the FPI pursues Vision 2030, our focus is on building a stronger, more recognised and more impactful profession. Our ambition is to empower people to build better futures through trusted professional financial planning. This means growing and retaining a diverse professional community, strengthening standards, building strategic partnerships, advancing innovation, supporting education and advocating for the public good.
Realising this vision will take collective effort. Partnerships with professional bodies and associations, educational institutions, regulators, corporate partners, financial planning professionals, media platforms and consumers are all essential, with each stakeholder having a meaningful role to play. No single organisation can build the future of financial planning alone. The profession advances when we work together with clarity of purpose and respect for the contribution each stakeholder brings.
This is why Blue Chip’s contribution over the past 100 editions deserves such sincere recognition. Through informed journalism, professional storytelling and thoughtful industry commentary, Blue Chip has helped create connections, stimulate debate and support continuous professional development. It has provided a platform where important ideas can be shared and where the profession can see both its progress and its potential.
As we celebrate this landmark edition, we should also celebrate the people behind it: the editors, journalists, designers, contributors, advertisers, partners and readers who have helped shape Blue Chip into what it is today. Milestones of this nature are never achieved by individuals alone. They are the result of consistency, resilience and a community united by a common purpose.
No single organisation can achieve this alone.
To Alexis and the entire Blue Chip team: thank you for your dedication to excellence, your commitment to the financial planning profession and your willingness to evolve with the needs of the industry. Your work has helped inform, connect and elevate financial planners across South Africa and the FPI values the role you continue to play.
To the readers: thank you for your engagement, your curiosity and your commitment to lifelong learning. A publication is only as strong as the community that reads it, contributes to it and uses it to think differently about the future.
And to the financial planning profession: may we continue to embrace innovation without losing our humanity, pursue growth without compromising our values and strive for excellence while remaining deeply committed to service.
Congratulations on 100 editions, Blue Chip. Here’s to the next 100!
Yours,
Lelané Bezuidenhout, CFP®, CEO, Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa
