Olwethu Masanabo, Chairperson of the Board, FPI

As chairperson of the FPI, I reflect on a year marked by growth, collaboration and a renewed appreciation for the critical role our profession plays in society. Serving the FPI has been an honour and a privilege, providing the opportunity to contribute to an organisation that promotes the value of professional advice for all South Africans.

When I assumed this role, the financial planning profession was operating in an environment of significant change. Regulatory developments, technological innovation, evolving client expectations and increasing demands for professional accountability shape the landscape in which we operate. These changes bring challenges and opportunities for our profession to demonstrate its relevance and value.

I have learned that leadership is fundamentally about stewardship. The chairperson’s role is to safeguard the organisation’s purpose and ensure its long-term sustainability. The FPI is the esteemed professional body and standard-setter for financial planning in South Africa. Our responsibility is to continue strengthening that legacy while preparing the profession for the future.

Over 2025/26, I have gained a deeper appreciation for professional standards and ethical leadership. At the heart of the FPI’s mission is competence, integrity and professionalism. The CFP® designation is the gold standard for financial planning globally, dedicated to technical expertise, ethical conduct and acting in the best interests of clients.

In a world where trust is increasingly valuable, the role of financial planners has never been more important. They guide clients through life’s most significant decisions, from retirement planning and wealth creation to risk management and estate planning. Consumers place trust in our profession and maintaining that trust requires a steadfast commitment to professional standards.

A key focus during 2025/26 has been ensuring that the FPI remains actively engaged with developments that affect the broader profession. Regulatory change is a defining feature of the financial services sector, and the FPI, through the Advocacy Committee, engages with policymakers, regulators and industry stakeholders. Through constructive participation, we ensure that the voice of financial advisors is heard and that regulatory developments support both consumer protection and professional growth.

The FPI’s strength lies in its members, volunteers and professional community. Throughout 2025/26, I have engaged with financial advisors countrywide at the convention, AGM and professional development events like the Annual Refresher. These interactions have reinforced the importance of creating opportunities for members to connect, share insights and contribute to the profession’s future.

Reflecting on the 2025/26 achievements, I am proud of the progress we have made together. We launched the FPI Education and Training Trust, Capstone Course and hosted the FPSB Chief Executives Committee (CEC) in Cape Town in April 2026. These accomplishments are due to collective effort and underscore what can be achieved when dedicated professionals work towards a common purpose.

The year has reinforced the importance of developing future generations of financial planners. As a profession, we must continue investing in emerging talent, supporting pathways to RFP®, FSA® and CFP® certifications and creating opportunities for young professionals to thrive. The long-term success of the profession depends on attracting, developing and retaining individuals who share our commitment to ethical practice.

My greatest lesson has been the power of collaboration. No individual, board or organisation advances the profession alone. Progress happens when all stakeholders come together around a shared vision. I have witnessed this collaborative spirit throughout 2025/26, which gives me great confidence in the future of our profession.

I am optimistic about the opportunities before us. The need for professional financial planning continues to grow. The FPI is uniquely positioned to champion the value of financial planning in South Africa. By upholding the highest standards of professionalism, supporting CFP®, RFP® and FSA® professionals and engaging meaningfully with our stakeholders, our profession will remain relevant, respected and impactful.

I extend my sincere gratitude to the Board, our members, volunteers and the FPI executive team and staff for their unwavering commitment. The achievements of 2025/26 belong to all of us. The journey has been both humbling and inspiring, and I look forward to continuing our shared mission of advancing professional financial planning and building better futures for South Africans.
