He served on the Western Cape Committee of the FPI for 4 years. He was chosen as the FPI Financial Planner of the Year in 2013-14 by the Financial Planning Institute (FPI) and then served as the FPI and CFP® (Certified Financial Professional) brand ambassador for a year.
He has a Bachelor Degree in Economics, a Diploma in Business Administration, a Diploma in Social Studies (from Oxford) and a post-graduate Diploma in Financial Planning.
Barry came to South Africa from Ireland in 1993 on an Oxbridge Rugby Tour. He joined Appleton, the asset management company, as a portfolio manager and was later head of client services. After five years he joined Brait Unit Trusts as the marketing director and was then made head of practice development of ipac South Africa.
Barry is a founding member of the Vulintaba Association, which encourages Lifestyle Financial Planning as a philosophy amongst independent financial planning businesses. He is passionate about South Africa and the potential it holds.
He founded the JDI Foundation in 1997, which gives professionals a framework in which they can use their skills, time, energy and money to help non-governmental organisations.
Barry was one of the founders of Vuka Rugby which got more schools in the townships to play rugby. He then went on to be one of the founders of CoolPlay. CoolPlay uses sport as an analogy for life and teaches sports coaches drills and conversations that enable them to weave life lessons into the training sessions or team talks. CoolPlay is supported by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. They currently reach 1800 children every week in rugby and netball. [/showhide]
Hannes started his career as an attorney. He gradually discovered that investments and estate planning are much more fun – and fulfilling – than spending time in courtrooms. During the past twenty years, he filled various roles, ranging from legal advisor, business development manager and investment specialist.

He is employed as Regional Manager with Momentum Wealth International. He is a non-practicing attorney, and his qualifications include an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning and a Postgraduate Diploma in Tax Strategy and Management, both from the University of the Free State.
In his current role, he assists advisors and their clients with offshore investing and implementing offshore investments such as endowment structures. He deals daily with questions on exchange control, taxation, situs tax, offshore succession planning and many related topics.
He grew up – and is still living in – that other (albeit lesser known) centre of international investing, Bloemfontein. [/showhide]
Started in the industry in 1997, as an analyst and portfolio manager at Appleton (now PSG) . Joined and founded Mitonoptimal (a DFM) in 2005 and was head of Global Investment strategy until 2020. This role was pivotal in setting the strategic and tactical asset allocation of the global portfolios.

I also regularly travelled to London, where I interviewed managers across the asset class spectrum. Went on to join Sterling as a wealth manager in 2020, where I manage high-net-worth individuals, who naturally have a bias to offshore investing.
Concurrently I moderate panels for Asset TV, both in respect of local and offshore managers. Lastly, I consult to Apollo Multi Asset Management UK, where I provide insights into global strategic and tactical asset allocation.
I am very fortunate to be able to leverage my Apollo and Asset TV discussions when providing bespoke portfolios for my clients.
