"Thank you, Momentum, for 34 unforgettable years," said Danie van den Bergh, one of the great characters of the financial planning industry, when he retired at the end of August.

Yesterday I closed a chapter that has shaped almost every part of who I am. After 34 years of total service, I worked my final day at Momentum — a place that became so much more than an employer. It became a home, a community, and a purpose‑driven family that I will cherish forever.

Walking out of the building, I felt an overwhelming sense of appreciation and gratitude. Momentum gave me a career filled with meaning, relationships that will last a lifetime, and a culture that always made people feel welcome, valued, and part of something truly unique.

Even as the business evolved, that culture — the heart of Momentum — remained a source of inspiration. It was never just a place to work; it was a place to belong, to contribute, and to grow.

I’ve been privileged to work with remarkable individuals who shaped me into the person I am today. Every colleague, adviser, leader, and client played a role in my journey. Our purpose — ”We build and protect our clients’ financial dreams” — was never just a slogan. It was something we lived every day. It was the driving force behind the red “M” we proudly love, and it united us in something bigger than ourselves.

And I must acknowledge the extraordinary drive and focus that Jeanette Marais brought to this purpose — her insistence that we live it through our actions, our decisions, and our service. Her leadership has already strengthened Momentum’s position as the place to be for clients and advisers, and her influence will continue shaping the future of advice in South Africa for years to come.

I also want to acknowledge the many external partners I worked with over the years — advertising agencies, production companies, financial media, broadcasters, sponsorship partners, and especially our long and meaningful relationship with cricket. Through this partnership, we launched one of the initiatives closest to my heart: the “Momentum Friendship Blazer”.

The blazer promoted “inclusivity” and the idea of “forging lifelong friendships”, reminding each of us of the responsibility we carry in the symbolism it represents. Worn with pride, it embodies the possibility we all have to change the world and help create a better South Africa — now and for future generations. It has been remarkable to witness how this initiative changed, and continues to change, how people engage with one another with respect, unity, and humanity.

I am humbled by how many friendships I have built — within Momentum and across so many external communities — because of this journey.

I must also thank my wife and children for their unwavering love and support throughout my career. They embraced the Momentum brand as deeply as I have, and that has been one of my greatest blessings.

As I step into a new season of life, I carry with me deep gratitude for every colleague, every leader, every moment of growth, and every relationship built along the way. Momentum will forever be part of my story, and I will always hold this incredible brand close to my heart.

Thank you for shaping a journey I will treasure for the rest of my life.
