The recent gathering of global leaders at the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) Chief Executives Committee (CEC) meeting in Cape Town served as a timely reminder that the financial planning profession stands at a pivotal moment.

As the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI), it was both an honour and a privilege to host our international counterparts. The conversations reaffirmed a shared global reality: while markets differ in structure and maturity, the challenges facing financial planners – and indeed the opportunities ahead – are remarkably aligned.

A consistent theme emerging from the CEC meeting was that the role of the financial planner is not diminishing but evolving. Across jurisdictions, the profession is shifting decisively away from product-centric advice towards holistic, long-term financial planning. Increasingly, planners are called upon not only to provide technical expertise, but to guide clients through complex, behavioural and often emotional financial decisions.

In parallel, discussions highlighted the growing responsibility placed on individuals to secure their own financial futures. In this context, the relevance of professional financial planning has never been greater. Yet, with this relevance comes a clear imperative: to ensure greater access to financial planning and to strengthen public confidence in the profession.

Locally, these global conversations strongly resonate with the work we are advancing at the FPI. As outlined in Vision 2030, our focus is on empowering people to build better futures through trusted professional financial planning and advice.

Through our evolving strategic framework focused on Financial Planning, Partnerships, Innovation, Standards and Advocacy (FPISA), we are actively positioning the profession to respond meaningfully to societal needs. This includes expanding the pipeline of financial planners, strengthening competency frameworks and ensuring that professional standards remain globally aligned and locally relevant.

A critical area of focus continues to be consumer education. In a country where financial literacy challenges persist, the role of the professional financial planner extends beyond advice to education and empowerment. The FPI’s consumer education initiatives are positioned not only as a regulatory requirement, but as a powerful advocacy tool connecting financial education with access to qualified professional advice.

Similarly, we are placing deliberate emphasis on building a sustainable and inclusive pipeline for future professionals. Attracting younger entrants into the profession, supporting diversity and ensuring clear career pathways are essential to the long-term sustainability of financial planning.

Another defining theme is the impact of technology, artificial intelligence and innovation. While these developments present opportunities, they also introduce new ethical and professional considerations. Our challenge is to integrate them responsibly while retaining the human connection that underpins trusted financial advice.

Importantly, financial planning remains fundamentally about people, enabling individuals and families to make informed decisions, build resilience and achieve long-term financial wellbeing.

For South Africa, hosting the FPSB CEC meeting was more than a milestone, it was an opportunity to demonstrate the strength, resilience and global relevance of our profession, while reinforcing the FPI’s role as both a standards authority and an advocate for the public good.

As you engage with this edition of Blue Chip, I encourage you to reflect on your role in shaping the future of the profession. The conversations we had in Cape Town are not confined to global forums; they are directly relevant to the work we do every day.

The future is not something we wait for, it is something we build.

Warm regards,

Lelané Bezuidenhout, CFP®
