At the prestigious annual awards ceremony of the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI) held in August in Cape Town, a number of awards were conferred on deserving financial planning professionals in recognition of their commitment to fostering a culture of quality and excellence in the provision of professional financial advice and financial planning in South Africa. This event forms part of the FPI’s annual professionals’ convention.
The giving of these awards to our members that demonstrated meaningful and distinctive practices and ethical conduct coupled with hard work is key to cultivating a level of excellence that all professionals in the field of financial planning can aspire towards- said Lelané Bezuidenhout, CEO of the FPI.
The 2024 Gala Awards Ceremony featured a total of six special awards, culminating with the renowned FPI Financial Planner of the Year Award.
2024 Top Candidate in the CFP® Professional Competency Examination
Charl Bouwer, CFP® received this award which is presented to a candidate who achieved the highest mark in the CFP® Professional Competency Examinations.
The “It Starts with Me” Award
Nonhlanhla Nxele, CFP®, is the winner of this prize for 2024. This award recognises an individual who endorses the CFP® mark, and the professionalism that accompanies the mark, embedded in what they do. The winner is acknowledged for their contribution towards professionalising financial services and for their tireless efforts to promote the CFP® designation.
Diversity and Inclusion Award
Tsungai Masendeke, CFP® is the winner of this award in 2024. The award recognises someone who displays commitment to diversity and has significantly impacted individuals, communities or organisations promoting inclusivity and creativity within the financial planning profession.
The FPI Harry Brews Award
Bruce Whitfield, Broadcaster, is the winner of this award in 2024. The FPI Harry Brews’ Award recognises an individual who makes a significant contribution to the financial planning profession through service to society, academia, training, government, media and any other professional activities.
The 2024 Financial Planner of the Year Award
The FPI Financial Planner of the Year competition is renowned for its rigorous evaluation process, comprising three challenging rounds that showcase the exceptional skills and abilities of the finalists.
The winner for 2024 is Rudolph Geldenhuys, CFP®.
Student Financial Plan Competition Winners
This award recognises a team of students from one of FPI’s recognised education providers that were judged over three rounds. These included a submission and presentation of a financial plan, as well as a quick-fire question round.
The winners of the award were “Team Intercontinental” from the University of Johannesburg consisting of Nambitha Masuku, Maseko Mametja and Nkosingiphile Kubheka.

The Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa is the only professional body in South Africa to offer the FSA®, RFP® and internationally recognised CFP® professional designations. It is a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) registered professional body and our professional designations are registered on the National Learning Registered Database (NLRD).
